When Were Guns Invented? A Brief History of Guns

Guns changed warfare, self-defense and hunting forever – but when were guns invented and how did they evolve into the guns we know today? In this post we take a quick look at the history of guns from ancient Chinese black powder to modern collectible guns.

The Beginning: Gunpowder and Early Firearms in China

Guns started in 9th century China where black powder – the first form of gunpowder – was invented by Taoist alchemists. By the 10th and 11th centuries the Chinese military was experimenting with gunpowder based weapons including flame throwers, bombs and crude projectile devices.

The first known firearm is the “fire lance” developed in the 12th century. It was essentially a spear with a tube attached that could fire flames or shrapnel using black powder. Not very accurate or reliable but it laid the ground work for later gunpowder weapons.

The Hand Cannon (13th–14th Century)

By the late 13th century the hand cannon emerged – arguably the world’s first portable gun. These early cannons were made of metal or bamboo and were ignited with a match or smoldering wick. They were hard to aim and slow to reload but marked a big turning point – gunpowder weapons were no longer limited to siege warfare or big artillery.

The hand cannon spread quickly across Asia and into the Middle East and Europe where local innovations would dramatically change its design.

Matchlocks and Early Firearms in Europe (15th–17th Century)

By the 1400s European gunsmiths refined firearm design with the matchlock mechanism – the first system that allowed a gun to be fired with a trigger. Matchlocks used a burning wick (or match) to ignite the powder in the flash pan, much more accurate and reliable.

This period also saw the rise of arquebuses and muskets, long guns used by infantry soldiers. These weapons changed military tactics and diminished the dominance of heavily armored knights on the battlefield.

Flintlocks, Percussion Caps and Industrialization (17th–19th Century)

Flintlocks were introduced in the early 17th century and replaced matchlocks and wheellocks with a simpler and more reliable firing mechanism. They were the dominant ignition system for nearly 200 years and were used in the American Revolution and Napoleonic Wars.

In the early 1800s the percussion cap system replaced flintlocks, offering faster and more weather resistant ignition. This led directly to the invention of repeating rifles, revolvers and eventually breech loading firearms.

Modern Firearms and Ammunition (19th Century–Today)

The 19th century was an explosion of innovation in firearm technology. Key developments included:

  • Self contained cartridges: Combining bullet, powder and primer into one unit
  • Bolt action and lever action rifles
  • Semi automatic and automatic weapons
  • Smokeless powder for cleaner and more efficient firing

By the 20th century firearms were mass produced, standardized and specialized for military, law enforcement, sport shooting and personal defense.
